Indian Turnip Pickle Recipe


Indians do not lack imagination in food preparation especially when it comes to turnips which have always been boiled or roasted.  They have cooked this tuber in many ways and have even thought of pickling it.

Coupled with native ingredients, this Indian Turnip Pickle Recipe is uniquely delicious – a whole new way of looking, preparing and eating turnips!

To prepare, you will need to have the following ingredients:

  • Half a kilo of turnips
  • 15 cloves of garlic
  • 15 pieces of dry dates
  • A cup of mustard oil
  • A cup of vinegar
  • A cup of sugar
  • A teaspoon of onion seeds
  • A teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • A teaspoon of peppercorn
  • Six teaspoons of seedless raisins
  • Two teaspoons of chili powder
  • 1/3 cup of salt

To pickle turnips, follow these instructions:

Peel and cut the turnips in thick, round slices.  Rub it with salt and store for eight hours.  Then, mix the sugar and the remaining spices together.  Ground the seedless raisins and dates together with a small amount of vinegar.

Fry the ground garlic in a pan using olive oil until it turns brown.  Add the turnips.  Once it becomes dry, add vinegar, mixed sugar and spices, ground raisins and dates.

Remove from pan and transfer in an airtight jar.  After for six days, you are now ready to use these delicious, spicy pickles!
